About This Workshop
Join Catherine in the Flower Garden Log Cabin for a wonderfully creative day learning the traditional craft of Indian block printing. Using hand-carved wooden blocks and vibrant fabric paints, you’ll design and print your very own pair of cushion covers — a completely unique, handmade piece of home décor to take home and treasure.
Indian block printing is a craft with roots stretching back centuries, originating in the textile regions of Rajasthan, India — and it’s every bit as satisfying and absorbing today as it’s always been. There’s something deeply joyful about dipping a beautifully carved wooden block and pressing a perfect pattern into fabric. Whether you’re a complete beginner or have tried printing before, you’ll find this is a wonderfully meditative and rewarding way to spend a day.
What You’ll Do
We’ll begin with a short introduction to the history of Indian block printing and a demonstration of techniques, so you feel fully at ease before you start. You’ll then experiment on practice fabric, exploring pattern repeats, colour combinations, and layouts — finding your own style before committing your design to your cushion covers.
Once you’re ready, you’ll print both of your cotton cushion covers using a wide selection of hand-carved wooden blocks and a full palette of fabric paints. Catherine will be on hand throughout to guide and inspire you.
By the end of the day, you’ll leave with two beautifully printed cushion covers — each one completely unique to you — as well as the skills and confidence to carry on printing at home.
