Start Your Cutting Garden This Autumn

If you’ve ever wanted to grow your own flowers for cutting, September is the moment to begin. Autumn-sown seeds produce stronger, earlier, more abundant plants than anything sown in spring — and this course shows you exactly how to do it.

Join Catherine, founder of Flower Garden Florist, and experienced grower Helen from The Smithy Gardens for a friendly morning in our Flower Garden Log Cabin. This is the first stage in learning to develop your own cutting garden, and it’s focused entirely on what you can do right now, in early September, to get a year ahead.

Everything we teach follows sustainable, eco-friendly, no-chemical principles — the same way we grow our own Welsh flowers here at Flower Garden Florist, in the spirit of #GrownNotFlown.

What You’ll Learn

  • Which flowers are best suited to early autumn sowing, and why they perform so well
  • How to sow and germinate successfully in September
  • Caring for young plants through the winter — practical methods whether or not you have a greenhouse
  • What to do with your seedlings come early spring
  • How to work with the space you actually have, from a few pots to a full plot
  • Sustainable, chemical-free growing practices throughout

Make and Take Home

  • We’ll finish by making a small seasonal arrangement in a bud vase using flowers grown here in the cutting garden — yours to take away.
  • You’ll be sowing your first September seeds in trays to take home.
  • Handouts with useful information we’ve covered in the course from what seeds to grow, when to grow and where to get your seeds from.

A Relaxed, Supportive Morning

This is a small, friendly group with plenty of time for questions. Bring details of your own garden or growing space and we’ll talk through what will work for you specifically. No experience needed — this course is designed for complete beginners.
